Baby Bear (ursa minor) 5km
Momma/Papa Bear (ursa major) 15km
or the Family Bear Double, 5km + 15km
Oct 19, 2014
Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood, CO

Come out for some late season trail racing fun on
"the roller coaster equivalent of trail running." Enough of a challenge for the veteran trail runner, yet a good intro course to real trail running for novices. Great spectator viewing.

Course description: The 2014 races will be run in a counter-clockwise direction, the reverse of 2013.

Baby Bear (Ursa Minor): The 5km course is 99% dirt, with ~300' of climbing. It covers the first, eastern, hillier part of the 15km big loop. 9:15am start.

Momma/Poppa Bear (Ursa Major): The 15km has ~1,000' of climbing, all dirt (a few wooden bridges), single and double track, over a mix of moderate to steep hills and rolling/flat sections. Start with a 1-mi loop around the meadow, where the start/finish is, then two ~4.17mi circuits on the surrounding trails. 10:00am start.

All Runuphill Racing courses come with a Won't-Get-Lost guarantee.*

In case of muddy trails, an alternate course will be used.
The park does not allow races on muddy trails. It may be all or partially paved, using park roads and bike paths, but will be hilly. The race will not be postponed to a later date due to muddy trails. Click for the National Weather Service forecast for the area.

Aid Stations
Two aid stations per lap for the 15km, one for the Little Fiver:
  • Along Morrison Rd, about the middle of the big circuit, 3.55mi & 7.82mi for the 15km, 1.4mi for the 5km. Water and sports drink.
  • At the end of each lap, by the shelter, 1mi, 5.2mi and the finish of the 15km. Water and sports drink

Beware the Bear 5km,
counter clockwise Beware the Bear 15km,
                                counter clockwise

5km start: Start on the dirt road, ~100m W of the parking lot by registration. Head W towards the lot. Turn right just before the lot, and follow directions around the shelter and lot, counter-clockwise, back to the dirt road. Go right down the dirt road. At the bottom, follow directions as you cross the road, onto a single track. Take the single track for ~50m, then go left on the dirt road, and through the dirt lot. At the E end of the dirt lot, go left back up to the paved road. Cross the road, then veer right across a footbridge, and onto single track.

Head up the fairly short, ~5% climb. Stay right at the Y, then straight across the next trail on a flat section. The trail gets increasingly steeper. At the lower bluff, go right, down a single track, ~5-7%, for ¼mi.

Take a sharp left onto jeep double tracks. Follow the tracks gradually uphill for another
¼mi. Veer left onto a single track, into a small canyon, up fairly steeply. The trail cruves left and doesn't quite flatten out across the N side of the plateau. After s short, steep rise, stay right, and head very steeply downhill.

At the bottom, go right onto the double track, gradually uphill.. It kicks up steeply, then passes through a fence line. Stay left, following the trail alongside Morrison Rd, across a large culvert. The aid station will be on the W side. At the aid station, go left, passing through a fence line and back into the park.

Follow the double track S, along the irrigation canal, for ~300m. The track curves slightly left then right, then a bigger right curve heading Just after the curve, go left across the foot bridge, then right on the other side. Anyone not at this point before the start of the 15km, may be held at the bridge until all the 15km runners have passed this point on their opening loop. Shortly past the footbridge, stay right at the fork. The trail curves left, downhill, becoming wider, moderately rocky, and moderately steep. After ~150m, half way down, take a sharp left up a short, and very steep and rocky climb. Take a sharp right at the top. Follow the single track around the meadow and towards the NW corner of the shelter and the finish.

10-Spot opening loop: Start just W of the dirt parking lot by the shelters. Head E, down the road, ~100m. Before the road starts to drop steeply, take a sharp left onto a single track. Up a short rise, before the irrigation ditch, go left. Continue W along the S side of the ditch, past the footbridge. The big loop comes from across the bridge, so you are now on the finishing part of the course. Continue past the finish, then out for two circuits of the big loop.

Big Loop: Past the finish, go right around the parking lot chain, then left down the dirt road, where the start was. This time, stay on the dirt road, past the single track, as it heads steeply downhill. Near the bottom of the hill, before the paved road, go left, across a footbridge, and onto the single track.
Head up the fairly short, ~5% climb. Stay right at the Y, then straight across the next trail on a flat section. The trail gets increasingly steeper. At the lower bluff, go right, down a single track, ~5-7%, for ¼mi.

The aid station will be on the W side. At the aid station, go left, passing through a fence line and back into the park.

Follow the double track S, along the irrigation canal, for ~300m. The track curves slightly left then right. Just as it starts to curve to the W, take the first right, away from the irrigation ditch, heading towards the hill. This trail starts fairly flat, getting increasingly steeper (15%-20%) near the top. Cross through the fence line, then follow the trail to the left, downhill. The trail drops at 10%, flattens out in the middle, then gets a bit steeper towards the bottom.

Merge back onto the trail alongside Morrison Rd, heading W. This trail gently rolls for 1/3mi. At the gate, take a 180° back into the park, and head E on the service road. There's a moderate dip in the middle. After climbing out, continue along the irrigation canal to the footbridge. Go right across the bridge, then right again, merging back with the opening loop.

Continue past the finish, repeating the big loop a second time. Stay to the outside and around the shelter when heading out for the final circuit. Stay to the inside, on the grass, to finish.
